The Matrix is a very quotable film. “Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.” Morpheous‘ words resonate now deeper than ever. But perhaps fate alone is not at fault for this predicament. It is with distress that I sense here the mechanism of a self-destructive tendency. If my condition were a boat, my subconscious would have rotten the throats of its paddles. Forgive me, I jest, but you must understand the cruel humour of it all. That I, of all people, should be tasked with writing a blog post on Valentine’s day.
My relationship with deadlines is very typical, I think, of most students. And yet, I am writing this feature weeks before the 14th. It is somehow natural – I do not wish the day I have so carefully contrived, consisting mostly of self-loathing and crying, to be disrupted by a procrastinator’s guilt. To remedy the deafening silence of my loneliness, I intend to spend the half-weekend listening to all the horrible music I like and watching comfort films. And if you, too, are a victim of hapless fate, I extend my invitation to you to join in my indulgence. Let’s be alone together 🙂
My Neighbour Totoro

Pure nostalgia pick. It is also one of the few Studio Ghibli films not centred around a romantic love story, making it perfectly suited for our intentions.
The Bee Movie

St. Valentine is the patron saint of beekeepers. Also, did you know that according to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly? Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyways. Because bees don’t care what humans think is impossible.
The Star Wars Prequels

The obvious choice for any occasion. Regardless of whether you love or hate the prequels, you must concede, Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor make them well worth the watch on their own.
I Am Legend

Is loneliness quantifiable? If yes, then you may find consolation in being somewhat less alone than Will Smith in this one. Pets don’t count.
Dead Poets Society

I can’t think of a compelling argument, other than me just really liking the film. Though, if you’ve never seen it before, I recommend you opt for one of the other options today.
Honourable mentions
Shrek – Donkey makes me jealous.
